Frequently asked
questions about canine freestyle

Who
can do canine freestyle?
You and your dog can! No matter what your ages or
physical condition, as long as your dog is well-socialized to people and
other dogs, and has basic obedience skills, you can both enjoy
freestyle. You design your routines to fit you and your dog’s own style.
There are no required moves in most freestyle venues.
What
if I have two left feet when it comes to dancing?
Handlers do not have to know how to dance. In fact, most
canine freestylers have little dance experience. You pick your music and
moves, so your routine can be as active (and intricate!) as you wish.
Can handlers
and dogs with physical challenges do canine freestyle?
Yes. Handlers in wheelchairs or dogs who have physical
limitations are encouraged to participate, developing moves and routines
that work for them. One of the many fun aspects of this sport is that YOU
design routines to suit you and your dog. Our group supports each other
in designing routines and sharing ideas. We are there to help.
Does training
canine freestyle complement training for other dog sports and
activities?
Definitely yes! Many of our club members also enjoy
agility, conformation, and competitive obedience. Canine freestyle is a
sport that enhances performance in other dog sports through the physical
conditioning the dog and handler experience as well as the attention and
bonding that occurs.
Nationally, many
of the top freestylers have upper division titles in obedience, agility
and other dog sports. And when it's time to retire a dog from the
obedience or agility ring, canine freestyle can still be enjoyed, since
the handler determines the level of physical effort needed for their
routine.
How much
training should I do with my dog before I start canine freestyle?
Your dog definitely doesn't have to be trained in
advanced obedience skills to begin freestyle training. If he or
she knows basic obedience (sit, down, stay, come) and is friendly with
other dogs and people, that's all that's necessary to begin. Currently
Rio Grande Canine Freestylers is able to accommodate only adult
handlers.
Do I need to
devote a lot of time to training and participating in canine freestyle?
You can devote as much or as little time as you wish. You can define
your own personal freestyle goals. Club sessions are a great way to get
in a practice session in a fun, supportive environment.
Is canine
freestyle open to all dogs?
Yes. Rio Grande Canine Freestylers welcomes all breeds
and mixed breeds. For members interested in competition, both national
titling organizations accept all breeds and mixed breeds. |
